Can credits from this program be transferred to universities?
There are no credits allocated to the program. However, participation in the program will increase the student’s portfolio and allow them to be more competitive when they do apply to post-secondary institutions.
Do you offer financial aid or scholarships?
At this time, we offer two scholarships for students of Aboriginal ancestry. Scholarship applications will be available on October 2, 2017 and are due by December 15, 2017.
Please note: Do not register in the Institute if you are planning to attend as a scholarship student as the scholarship admission is run separately and we cannot refund your tuition if you are awarded a scholarship.
How big are the studios?
All studios are limited to 15 students.
Are there language requirements for the Summer Institute for Teens?
All classes are taught in English. Students whose first language is not English should note that they are required to be proficient in written and spoken English and be able to participate in group discussions and presentations in English. As a guideline, we would expect you to have an IELTS score of 4.5 or 6.0 for lecture courses (such as Visual Culture).
Do tuition prices include taxes?
Do you provide housing?
Emily Carr University of Art + Design offers housing through the Langara homestay program. Please see our accommodations page for more details.
Can I arrange my own housing?
Students can make their own housing arrangements if they would prefer to do so. Students may choose to stay with a family member or friend during their time at Emily Carr or stay in town with a parent or guardian.
Are students allowed to miss classes?
We encourage students to attend all classes. If they are going to miss a class, parents or guardians must notify the program coordinator via email or phone as soon as possible. If students miss more than 15% of the program, they will not receive their certificate of completion.
Are meals provided to students?
Lunch is not provided, but students have access to our cafeteria and to indoor and outdoor eating areas on campus. Additional lunch time talks and programming may be scheduled over the course of the month and students are encouraged to attend.
Are supplies included in the tuition fee?
A kit of basic art supplies is included with tuition. Students can expect to spend up to $100 on additional materials specific to their studio.
Are transportation cost, such as bus passes, included in the tuition fee?
No, transportation and bus passes are not included in the Teens & Youth tuition fees. Visit Translink for bus fare information.
Do students have Emily Carr Library access?
Yes, providing the appropriate waiver has been signed and returned to the Continuing Studies office prior to the program start date.
What happens if a studio is cancelled?
Students will be contacted and then placed into their second studio choice.
Do students get to keep the artwork created in their studio?
Yes, students keep all of their artwork and can pick up their artwork after the exhibition ends. Arrangements for artwork to be shipped (for students leaving Vancouver before the pick-up date) must be done by no later than Thursday, July 26 2018. Students are responsible and accountable for purchasing the appropriate packaging and postage to ship back to their home addresses. Emily Carr University will not arrange any shipping details or associated costs for shipping and does not take responsibility for keeping or storing students’ works. Artwork is kept on-site until the pick-up date.
When will I receive my materials list and other information after I have registered?
Welcome packages with important information regarding materials, schedule, etc. will be made available to registered students after final registration closes in late June, 2018.
When do I receive my certificate of completion?
Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive their certificate via email in the fall 2018.
